Where the film’s first half, divided into two acts (“Ike & Tina” and “Family”), variously addresses Turner’s youth in rural Tennessee, where she watched her parents fight until her mother, Zelma, abruptly walked out; her early years on the road with Ike and the Ikettes; life at home with her four sons; the abuse—at length—and her attempted suicide with sleeping pills; that fateful night in 1976; and Turner’s divorce from Ike in 1978, when she gave up everything except her name, Tina’s latter half (“Comeback,” “The Story,” and “Love”), dwells on Turner’s long and winding road to true superstardom. There are those first, fumbling stabs at a solo career, mostly via television appearances and cabaret nights in Las Vegas; her minting in Europe—and then in the rest of the world, too—as a proper rockstar with the release of Private Dancer in 1984 (the anthemic single “What’s Love Got to Do With It” became her first and only No. 1 hit in the United States); and her long-simmering love affair with Bach, a former record executive.
